228 Memorial Day
Saturday, February 28, 2026
228 Memorial Day commemorates the 228 Incident of 1947, when a military crackdown in Taiwan killed thousands of people and led to the White Terror that followed. Observed on 28 February, it is a day of reflection on the violence and of remembrance for those who died.
History
The 228 Incident began on 28 February 1947, when the Taiwan Provincial Government imposed martial law over a citizen protest against the government's mishandling of a violent incident in Taipei. The crackdown killed an estimated tens of thousands of people over the following months and began the period known as the White Terror. The date was later designated a national holiday, and memorial halls were established across Taiwan.
How It's Celebrated
Communities gather at memorial halls and parks for ceremonies of remembrance, and the Taipei 228 Peace Memorial Park is a focal point for public tributes. Families of victims continue to hold private memorial rites, and the day is also marked by exhibitions and educational events about Taiwan's democratic transition.
