Ashura

Ashura is celebrated in Bahrain like nowhere else. Most Bahrainis are Shia Muslims, though the rulers of the Kingdom of Bahrain are Sunni. The public processions and mourning that is common in Bahrain for Ashura is not common in other Gulf countries. Therefore this day brings in thousands of Shias from neighbouring Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and elsewhere to join in the events every year. Ashura comes on the 10th day of the Islamic month of Muharram, a month during which Shias mourn. Both the 9th and 10th day are kept as a public observance in Bahrain, but the 10th day is most important, for that is the anniversary of the death of Muhammad’s grandson, Imam Hussain, in the Battle of Karbala in A.D. 680. All month long, Shias teach about Imam Hussain’s life example in sermons at their mosques. Food is also given out to people out on the streets, as well as to the poor, and the Bahraini government donates both food and money for this purpose every year. The Bahraini flag, normally white with red at the right end is transformed into a white-and-black flag of mourning for Ashura purposes, and these flags are hung up over public streets, along with other Ashura Day banners. The right to hang up these flags and banners is included in Bahrain’s constitution, and Ashura Day processions in Bahrain date back at least to 1891, when the first such celebrations was put on the historical record.

Eid al-Adha

The largely Muslim land of Mauritania takes celebration of Eid al-Adha very seriously. A two-day public holiday is observed each year as part of the festivities. In 2026, Eid al-Adha falls on Wednesday 27 May. The holiday will be on Monday 17 May in 2027. A special government moon-sighting committee announces the first day of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah every year, which then sets the date for Eid al-Adha on the tenth day of that month. And the celebration continues for four days from the tenth to the fourteenth of Dhu al-Hijjah. The first order of business for Muslims on Eid al-Adha is to put on their best clothes and head to mosque in early morning. There they learn about Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail to Allah. Then they head home to slaughter an animal, share part of it with the poor, and then feast and celebrate all day with family and friends.

Eid al-Adha Holiday

Eid al-Adha is the most important of all Islamic holidays on Bahrain’s national calendar. It occurs on the tenth day of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah on the Islamic calendar, while the date moves 11 days earlier each year on the Gregorian calendar. In 2026, Eid al-Adha falls on Wednesday 27 May. The holiday will be on Sunday 16 May in 2027. Eid al-Adha is a very holy day for Muslims, yet, in Bahrain, it has become a very exuberant festival day as well. There are many events for kids and adults alike all over the island, and there are many special luncheons at hotels and restaurants as well as fireworks shows. Most Muslims will go to mosque, sacrifice an animal for the feast if they can afford it, put on their best clothes, visit friends and relatives, and spend a lot of time with family at home.

Eid al-Fitr

One of the most important holidays in Algeria and many other Islamic countries is Eid al-Fitr. Eid al-Fitr means “festivity of breaking of the fast”, and it comes at the end of the long fasting and prayer month of Ramadan on the first day of the month Shawwal. In 2027, Eid al-Fitr falls on Tuesday 9 March. The holiday will be on Saturday 26 February in 2028. During Eid, Algerians attend a local mosque for prayers and a sermon. They will also give an offering to charity, usually in the form of food, called the “zakat al-Fitr”. As in many other lands, Algerians buy and wear new clothing for Eid al-Fitr, and the wearing of traditional cultural clothing has become popular again in recent years. At home, people will indulge in large feasts, which are quite welcome after the long fast. chick peas couscous pasta, beef, sea food, vegetables, and fruits, are all consumed at family feasts. Many will also exchange gifts and cards and, of course, greet each other with “Happy Eid!” this time of year.
