Asiatic Fleet Memorial Day
Sunday, March 1, 2026
Asiatic Fleet Memorial Day marks the Battle of Guadalcanal, fought in the Solomon Islands from August 1942 to February 1943. Observed on 1 March, it honours the sailors and Marines of the U.S. Navy's Asiatic Fleet who served and died in the Pacific campaign, and it is particularly remembered at the Guadalcanal battle sites.
History
The Battle of Guadalcanal was the first major Allied offensive against Japan. U.S. forces landed on 7 August 1942 and fought for six months over the island, with both sides suffering heavy casualties at sea and on land. Because the battle was fought largely by the U.S. Navy's Asiatic Fleet and Marine aircraft in the South Pacific, 1 March — the anniversary of the Japanese withdrawal — is observed as Asiatic Fleet Memorial Day, and the U.S. Navy holds commemorations at the battle's memorial sites in the Solomon Islands.
How It's Celebrated
Naval ceremonies are held at the Guadalcanal Memorial and at the American Memorial Park on Munda Island, with wreaths laid and shipboard services conducted by sailors from the fleet. Veterans attendants gather for remembrance ceremonies, and naval communities mark the day with memorial services and educational programs about the Pacific campaign.
