Colonization Begins. The Central African Republic becomes a French colony, formerly known as Ubangi-Shari
History
French colonization began in 1889 when officers established posts along the Ubangi and Shari rivers. The region became part of French Equatorial Africa in 1910. French colonial rule introduced infrastructure but imposed forced labor and harsh administrative controls. Independence came on August 13, 1960, with the Central African Republic forming from the former colony. President François Bozizé was overthrown in 2012, triggering sectarian conflict that continues to affect stability. The holiday commemorates the establishment of the republic and the country's sovereignty despite ongoing challenges to governance.
