General Pulaski Memorial Day
Sunday, October 11, 2026
General Pulaski Memorial Day honours Kazimierz Michał Pulaski, the Polish military leader who fought in the American Revolutionary War and was mortally wounded at the Siege of Savannah in 1779. Observed on 11 October, it commemorates Pulaski and all Polish Americans who contributed to the fight for American independence.
History
Kazimierz Pulaski (1743–1779), known in America as Casimir Pulaski, was a Polish nobleman and military commander who crossed the Atlantic to join the Continental Army in 1777. He served under George Washington, distinguished himself at the Battle of Brandywine and Germantown, and was promoted to brigadier general. Pulaski was killed during the failed assault on Savannah on 8 October 1779. Because his death preceded the war's end, the anniversary of his birth on 11 October was chosen to honour him, and Polish communities in the United States have marked the day since.
How It's Celebrated
Polish-American communities hold Masses, parades and wreath-laying ceremonies, with the largest observances in Chicago, New York and Connecticut. Pulaski shrines and memorials are decorated, and bilingual programmes recount his role in the American Revolution and the lasting friendship between Poland and the United States.
