— days to go

The Hung Kings Festival, also known as Hung Kings' Commemoration Day or Hung Vuong Festival, is a major Vietnamese festival honoring the Hung Kings, the legendary founders of the Vietnamese nation. According to tradition, the Hung Kings established Van Lang, the first Vietnamese state, in 2879 BCE and ruled for eighteen dynasties. The festival takes place annually on the 10th day of the third lunar month at the Hung Temple complex on Nghia Linh Mountain in Phu Tho Province. It is one of the most important cultural and spiritual events in Vietnam, recognized by UNESCO as part of the world's intangible cultural heritage. The observance serves as a profound expression of Vietnamese ancestral worship and national identity, with millions of people making pilgrimages to pay tribute to their legendary founding fathers.

History

The Hung Kings Festival has ancient origins dating back over 4,000 years to the Hung Kings era, considered the dawn of Vietnamese civilization. According to Vietnamese mythology, the first Hung King, Lac Long Quan, married Au Co, a fairy, and their hundred sons became the ancestors of the Vietnamese people. The eldest son established the Hung dynasty and ruled Van Lang from Phong Chau. The festival traditions were formalized over centuries, with Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang in the 10th century first officially recognizing the Hung Kings' temple worship. In 1917, the Nguyen Dynasty codified the annual commemoration, and in 2007, the Vietnamese government declared the 10th day of the third lunar month a national public holiday to honor the Hung Kings.

How It's Celebrated

The festival centers around the Hung Temple complex where elaborate ceremonies include incense offerings, processions, traditional music and dance performances, and the reading of eulogies. Participants dress in traditional Vietnamese attire and carry palanquins with offerings of rice cakes, sticky rice, and flowers to the temple altars. Folk games such as rice cooking competitions, human chess, dragon dancing, and wrestling are held throughout the festivities. The iconic dishes banh chung (square sticky rice cake) and banh day (round glutinous rice cake) are prepared as offerings symbolizing the earth and sky. Millions of pilgrims from across Vietnam travel to Phu Tho each year to participate in this deeply spiritual national celebration.

Labor Day

Labor Day in the Philippines is a public holiday every 1 May to celebrate the Filipino worker. It is a chance to remember hard-won workers’ rights. In 2027, Labor Day falls on Saturday 1 May. The holiday will be on Monday 1 May in 2028. Labor Day is also a day for unions to bring attention to current issues affecting workers. In 1886, unions in the United States were successful in demanding an eight-hour working day. In the Philippines, which was under United States colonial rule, workers organised a rally at the American Governor-General’s residence demanding fairer working conditions. This is officially recognised as the country’s first Labor Day. However, it wasn’t until after 1913 when eight-hour days, as well as other workers’ rights, were granted to the people. Labor Day in the Philippines also shares much of its ethos with other Labor Day celebrations around the world. Often many unions stage demonstrations at Malacañang (the former American-Governor’s residence, now Presidential palace) and big cities such as Manila, to bring attention to their grievances. Issues such as raising the minimum wage and inhumane working conditions continue to be brought before the government.

National Day

National Day, formerly called “Swedish Flag Day”, is a patriotic holiday in Sweden that is celebrated annually on 6 June with a public holiday. In 2026, National Day falls on Saturday 6 June. The holiday will be on Sunday 6 June in 2027. One reason the date of 6 June was chosen because it is the day in 1523 when Sweden became independent of the Union of Kalmar, which had formerly united Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. It was a genuine new start for Sweden, and it was the occasion of their electing Gustav Vasa as their king and adopting their own flag. The second reason for choosing 6 June is that, in 1809, Sweden adopted a new constitution on that date. The tradition of celebrating 6 June as Flag Day began in the 1890s, when Artur Hazelius held such celebrations at his Stockholm-based open-air museum named “Skansen.” In 1916, the tradition gained yet more steam when it was honoured at the Stockholm Olympics. In 1983, the name was changed to “National Day” by the Swedish parliament, and in 2004, it was finally voted an official public holiday. The main celebration of National Day is still at Skansen. The king and queen arrive for the ceremonial raising of the Swedish flag, a yellow cross against a blue field, to the top of the flag pole. Kids dress up in traditional clothing then bring the king and queen bouquets of beautiful, Swedish flowers.

In 2027, New Year's Day falls on Friday 1 January. The holiday will be on Saturday 1 January in 2028. It’s a day people look forward to practically for 364 days until it finally comes! As you walk down the streets on New Year’s Eve in cities and towns of Botswana, you’ll hear jubilant exclamations of “Happy!” with the final “y” stressed and stretched out long. Many people attend one or more parties for the New Year countdown, and many hold braais barbecues. When the clock finally strikes midnight, you’ll hear an explosion of drums. Some people and international tourists go to the town of Maun for a getaway in vacation lodges for the New Year season. Maun lies at the edge of the Okavango Delta and its swampy, wild terrain and wildlife.
