All Saints' Day Holiday

All Saints’ Day is a holiday in Burundi every 1 November. On this day, Christian believers remember known and unknown saints of past centuries. All Saints’ Day is a significant occasion on the traditional Christian calendar, and is observed by millions of Christians around the world. In 2026, All Saints' Day falls on Sunday 1 November. The holiday will be on Monday 1 November in 2027. Around two-thirds of Burundians are Roman Catholic, and most of the rest are Anglican or affiliated with another Protestant denomination. That means that the large majority of Burundi’s population celebrates All Saints’ Day, which is also a public holiday. The first day of November has been a Catholic feast day for centuries, having been set aside as a day to honour Christian saints and martyrs who lacked their own separate feast day by Pope Gregory IV in A.D. 837. German, Belgian, and English influences ultimately brought these traditions to Burundi during the 1800’s and 1900’s. Special church services are held on All Saints’ Day, during which the Beatitudes are traditionally read. Many also leave flowers on the graves of deceased relatives or light candles in their windows.

Assumption Day Holiday

Colombia celebrates Assumption Day with a public holiday every year. However, in Colombia, the official observance of Assumption Day is on the Monday following 15 August to create a three-day weekend. In 2026, Assumption Day falls on Monday 17 August. The holiday will be on Monday 16 August in 2027. The basis of the holiday is the belief that Mary the mother of Jesus Christ was either raised to Heaven without ever dying or, as some have it, soon after her death and before her body saw any corruption. She is believed to have been born and lived her life sinless, like Jesus, and this is in part why it is thought that she too must have ascended miraculously to Heaven as did Jesus. In Colombia, most families attend a special Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary church service, where they hear sermons on the importance of Mary and her virtues to their faith. There will also be some local religious processions and other festive events all around the country. And of course, everyone enjoys the extra day off from work and the resulting long weekend!

Christmas Day

Christmas in New Caledonia is celebrated with a public holiday every 25 December, as it is in a majority of countries around the world. This Christian festivity commemorates the birth of Jesus, and is part of a 22-28 day season in the Christian calendar known as Advent. In 2026, Christmas falls on Friday 25 December. The holiday will be on Saturday 25 December in 2027. Christmas Day and the Christmas season are a busy time of year in New Caledonia. This is one of the main tourist seasons on the island with many from Australia, New Zealand, and France coming here while the kids are out of school. About half in New Caledonia are Catholic and often go to mass all night on the day before Christmas. They seek to welcome Christmas morning while joyfully remembering the day that Christ was born. Many Protestants and Evangelicals in New Caledonia go to church on Christmas Day or the Sunday nearest to Christmas to celebrate the birth of the Saviour. The capital city of Noumea is lit up like a Christmas tree for the holidays each year. The city centre is the brightest spot, including Coconut Palm Square, the capital complex, and the Noumea Museum. Both palm trees and buildings are decked out with multi-coloured lights for the occasion.

Feast of St Peter and St Paul

In Chile, as in many other predominantly Roman Catholic countries, The Feast Day of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is a public holiday. It falls every 29 June. In 2026, Feast of St Peter and St Paul falls on Monday 29 June. The holiday will be on Monday 28 June in 2027. Saint Peter and Saint Paul Day is meant to commemorate the death and life of the two most prominent of all Christian Apostles, Peter and Paul. Catholic tradition has them both dying on the same day in A.D. 67 in the Mamertine Prison in Rome at the hands of the Emperor Nero. Peter is said to have been crucified upside down since he felt unworthy to die in the same manner as Christ, while Paul was beheaded because that was the execution method used for Roman citizens. For Saint Peter and Paul Day, many in Chile will attend a special celebratory mass where the martyrdom of Peter and Paul is remembered. Those living near the sea coast may deck out their docks and vessels in festive garb, to honour Saint Peter, the patron saint of all fishermen.
