Children's Day

Moldova celebrates Children’s Day in a big way every 1 June. It’s a national holiday here and there are children’s events put on all over the country. In 2026, Children's Day falls on Monday 1 June. The holiday will be on Tuesday 1 June in 2027. Children’s Day is meant to stress the importance and value of children intrinsically, in family units, and in society at large. It’s a holiday where parents and others with a heart for kids can give them a special gift, take them to special events, or do something else to show them how special they really are. Many Children’s Day events in Moldova will have games, crafts, cultural exhibits, children’s theatres, trampolines or inflatables, petting zoos, candy and sweets giveaways, and a host of other features that kids love. Events are also often organised at orphanages and people may visit to give gifts to orphans or just spend some time with them. The traditional first day of summer, 1 June, is a great time for outdoor activities. So children’s day often involves outings and showing kids the wonders of nature.

As many as 500,000 or more visitors flood into Macau every Labour Day, especially for the years when the holiday creates a long weekend. The gambling industry is the main cause of the tourist surge, as Macau is a gaming centre in the region. The casinos are packed, hotels are sold out, and the streets are crowded with tourists. In addition to being a day of recreation, Labour Day traditionally seeks to draw attention to the contributions and rights of workers to the economy.

Republic Day

November 28 is Republic Day in Chad to celebrate the time in 1958 when Chad gained “autonomous” status “within the French Community”. In 2026, Republic Day falls on Saturday 28 November. The holiday will be on Sunday 28 November in 2027. This holiday is important in that it commemorates the establishment of a republican form of government and of limited autonomy for Chad. But full independence did not come until 11 August, 1960. Chad moved gradually toward independence from France, in several stages. The real beginnings of the independence movement was during World War II, when political parties began to emerge in Chad. But nonetheless, Chad remained loyal to Free France rather than taking France’s defeat by Nazi Germany as an opportunity to rebel. The move to partial autonomy in 1958 came on the heels of a referendum held to that effect. And all of French Equatorial Africa gained this status based on the referendum, not just Chad.

Victory Day

Victory Day is celebrated every 16 December in Bangladesh to mark the anniversary of the surrender of Pakistan’s armed forces in Bangladesh at the end of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. In 2026, Victory Day falls on Wednesday 16 December. The holiday will be on Thursday 16 December in 2027. The union with Pakistan only came about as a result of the partition of British India into Muslim and Hindu “zones” in 1947 – India becoming one nation and Pakistan another. However, West Pakistan (modern Pakistan) was separated by hundreds of miles from East Pakistan (Bangladesh), which made for a most unnatural union. Later, Pakistan began to refuse equal status to the Bengali language and otherwise ignite resentment in Bangladesh. Finally, in 1971, a revolt broke out as Bengalis demanded self-rule. Pakistan, however, fought back. Aided by India, and by the logistical difficulty of holding onto a land so geographically separated from their homeland, Pakistan was finally defeated. The Pakistani General Amir Niazi finally surrendered to Allied General Jagjit Aurora on 16 December at the Ramna Race Course in downtown Dhaka. The crowds gathered to witness the event cheered wildly. Within only a few months’ time, most other nations of the world had recognised Bangladesh’s hard-won independence.
