Japan Dolls Festival

— days to go

Hinamatsuri, also known as the Dolls Festival or Girls' Day, is an annual Japanese celebration held on March 3 that prays for the health, growth, and happiness of young girls. The festival's centerpiece is the hina ningyo, a tiered display of ornamental dolls representing the Emperor, Empress, attendants, and musicians of the Heian period imperial court. The tradition originated from a fusion of ancient Chinese purification rituals involving paper dolls cast into rivers to carry away evil spirits, and the Heian period practice of aristocrats displaying dolls. During the Edo period, the custom evolved into the elaborate doll displays seen today. The festival is a cherished annual tradition in Japanese households, celebrated with special foods, decorations, and family gatherings that honor daughters and wish for their bright futures.

History

Hinamatsuri has its roots in two distinct traditions that merged over centuries. The first is a Chinese purification practice called hina-nagashi, dating back over a thousand years, where paper dolls were floated down rivers on small boats to carry away impurities and misfortune. The second is the Heian period (794-1185) court custom of displaying elaborate dolls. By the Edo period (1603-1868), the festival had evolved into the modern Hinamatsuri, with families of samurai and wealthy merchants displaying increasingly ornate hina doll sets. The tradition became widespread among commoners by the late Edo period, with the tiered platforms and specific doll arrangements becoming standardized. In 1687, the shogunate officially recognized the third day of the third month as the Girls' Festival, cementing its place in Japanese culture.

How It's Celebrated

Families display a multi-tiered platform covered in red cloth bearing a complete set of hina dolls, typically arranged seven tiers deep with the Emperor and Empress at the top. The display is set up in early February and removed immediately after March 3, as superstition holds that leaving dolls out beyond the festival may delay a daughter's marriage. Special festival foods are prepared and enjoyed, including hishi-mochi (diamond-shaped pink, white, and green rice cakes), chirashizushi (scattered sushi), hina-arare (colorful rice crackers), and ushiojiru (clam soup). Girls dress in kimono, visit friends' homes to admire each other's doll displays, and parents pray for their daughters' future happiness and good health. Some communities still practice hina-nagashi by floating paper doll boats down rivers.

Children's Day

Moldova celebrates Children’s Day in a big way every 1 June. It’s a national holiday here and there are children’s events put on all over the country. In 2026, Children's Day falls on Monday 1 June. The holiday will be on Tuesday 1 June in 2027. Children’s Day is meant to stress the importance and value of children intrinsically, in family units, and in society at large. It’s a holiday where parents and others with a heart for kids can give them a special gift, take them to special events, or do something else to show them how special they really are. Many Children’s Day events in Moldova will have games, crafts, cultural exhibits, children’s theatres, trampolines or inflatables, petting zoos, candy and sweets giveaways, and a host of other features that kids love. Events are also often organised at orphanages and people may visit to give gifts to orphans or just spend some time with them. The traditional first day of summer, 1 June, is a great time for outdoor activities. So children’s day often involves outings and showing kids the wonders of nature.

National Foundation Day

South Korea celebrates National Foundation Day every 3 October to look back to the founding of the Korean kingdom of Gojoseon in ancient times. This powerful kingdom is traditionally believed to have been founded by one Tangun, the son of a heavenly king and a bear that transformed itself into a woman. In 2026, National Foundation Day falls on Saturday 3 October. The holiday will be on Sunday 3 October in 2027. The capital of the kingdom of Gojoseon was Asadel. It is believed the kingdom was set up around 2300 B.C. Many centuries later, Joseon was founded, which was a kind of successor state. The “go” of Go-joseon means “ancient”. For a long time, this holiday was an unofficial harvest festival, and it was observed in accord with the Korean lunar calendar. However, it became a national holiday in 1909 and was dated on 3 October from 1949 onwards. The main event of National Foundation Day is a special ceremony held at Tangun’s mausoleum. In general, it is a patriotic holiday and a welcome day off for Korean workers.
