Independence Day

Mauritania became an independent nation by on 28 November 1960 by declaration of its “Constituent Assembly”. Independence Day is celebrated on this date each year to remember this important historic event. In 2026, Independence Day falls on Saturday 28 November. The holiday will be on Sunday 28 November in 2027. Although Berbers and other tribes had lived in the region for as long as anyone can remember, there was no “Mauritania” as such before the arrival of the French colonialists. They essentially created a new colony that incorporated the lands of numerous local tribes in the region into one “new country”. France colonised what is now Mauritania to block the expansion of Spanish Morocco and to create a “land bridge” between French Algeria and French West Africa. Their conquest of the area began at Adar and moved inland. After the French established a new constitution in 1958, they had hoped that Mauritania might remain within the “French Community” even if they opted for independence. But instead, the country fully left being under French influence by 1960. After independence, Morocco tried to oppose them or dominate them, but Mauritania successfully resisted.

Islamic New Year

Islamic New Year is a public holiday in Algeria. It takes places on the first day of the first month Muharram on the Islamic calendar. In 2026, Islamic New Year falls on Tuesday 16 June. The holiday will be on Sunday 6 June in 2027. The date of first day of (Awal) Muharram varies on the Gregorian Calendar since the Islamic Calendar is lunar-based and has only 354 days. The Islamic Calendar is known as the Hijri Calendar, and the first month of Muharram marks the moment in history when Muhammad fled from Mecca to Medina in C.E. 622. This trip is known as the “Hijira”, hence the “Hijri Calendar”. On Awal Muharram, Algeria’s Muslims will attend mosque, pray, and spend time with family. It is generally a day off work for people across the country.

Prophet Muhammad's Birthday

Brunei celebrates Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday on 12 Rabi al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic Calendar, as do other Sunni Islam countries. Shiites, by contrast, observe the prophet’s birthday five days later on the 17th of the 3rd month. In 2026, Prophet Muhammad's Birthday falls on Tuesday 25 August. The holiday will be on Sunday 15 August in 2027. The main event in Brunei on Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday, which is often referred to as Maulid-ur-rasul (“birthday of the messenger”), is a large public parade. You may see people dressed up in traditional Malay dress for the occasion, and you will hear marchers chanting out slogans while holding up banners. People will also attend special services in mosques and read or recite verses from the Koran on this day to help them remember Muhammad’s life and teachings. While a few sects of Islam, such as Wahabi and Salafi, reject celebrating Muhammad’s birthday as an “innovation”, most Muslims around the world and in Brunei practice it.
