— days to go

Mother's Day, on the second Sunday in May in the U.S., honors mothers and maternal figures with gifts, cards, flowers, meals, and quality time. It is one of the busiest days for restaurants and florists.

History

Created by Anna Jarvis in the early 1900s to honor her mother and all mothers. It became a U.S. national holiday in 1914. Jarvis later fought against its commercialization. Many countries have analogous days on different dates rooted in local history or religion.

How It's Celebrated

Spend the day with your mom or mother figures, give flowers (carnations are traditional), write a meaningful card or letter, take her out or cook a special meal, help with chores, or give an experience gift. Many also honor mothers who have passed or support maternal health causes.

Constitution Day

Every 14 March is a public holiday in Andorra called “Constitution Day”. Constitution Day commemorates the day in 1993 when Andorra’s current constitution was approved by 74 percent of the voters in a referendum. In 2027, Constitution Day falls on Sunday 14 March. The holiday will be on Tuesday 14 March in 2028. The government of Andorra has determined that businesses close down on four national public holidays, and Constitution Day is among those four. However, there may be some exceptions at ski resorts and certain tourist centres. Also on Constitution Day, there will be special speeches delivered by the two “co-princes” of Andorra and other important government leaders. The country will be full of flying Andorran flags and a host of cultural events. And you can also attend the big fireworks display in the capital city and the various concerts that also are held there on 14 March.

New Year Holiday

New Year’s Day is a holiday in Botswana as part of celebrations that start on New Year’s Eve and reach a high point with the turning of the clock from 11:59pm on 31 December to midnight on 1 January. In 2027, New Year's Day falls on Friday 1 January. The holiday will be on Saturday 1 January in 2028. New Year’s Day is a time of resolutions and starting fresh for some, while for others it is spent recovering from a big, late night spent with friends and family. In Botswana, New Year’s Day is a bigger holiday even than Christmas, and Botswana’s population is bustling with excitement as the new year approaches. It’s a day people look forward to practically for 364 days until it finally comes! As you walk down the streets on New Year’s Eve in cities and towns of Botswana, you’ll hear jubilant exclamations of “Happy!” with the final “y” stressed and stretched out long. Many people attend one or more parties for the New Year countdown, and many hold braais barbecues. When the clock finally strikes midnight, you’ll hear an explosion of drums. Some people and international tourists go to the town of Maun for a getaway in vacation lodges for the New Year season. Maun lies at the edge of the Okavango Delta and its swampy, wild terrain and wildlife.
