Australia Day

About halfway between Australia and India and a bit southwest off the coast of Sumatra lies Cocos Islands, also known as Keeling Islands. As an Australian Territory, Cocos Islands celebrates Australia Day along with mainland Australian states and territories. In 2027, Australia Day falls on Tuesday 26 January. The holiday will be on Wednesday 26 January in 2028. Australia Day is celebrated on 26 January to commemorate the arrival of the first British colonists back in 1788. In October 1786, Arthur Phillip was appointed captain of the HMS Sirius, and assigned to transport British convicts to the continent. His mission was to establish an agricultural work camp. Captain Phillip commanded a fleet of 11 ships and 1,500 passengers, including 700 prisoners. After an 8-month journey, they reached Sydney Cove. It was 26 January 1788 when the First Fleet landed in Sydney Cove. Between 18 and 20 January, the First Fleet of 11 ships sailed into Botany Bay to set up a penal colony there but the bay proved to be unsuitable. Captain Phillip took a team north and named the area on the south shore of Port Jackson as Sydney Cove. The formal establishment of the colony occurred two weeks later on 7 February.

Christmas Holiday

Christmas in Samoa is celebrated with a public holiday every 25 December, as it is in a majority of countries around the world. This Christian festivity commemorates the birth of Jesus, and is part of a 22-28 day season in the Christian calendar known as Advent. In 2026, Christmas falls on Friday 25 December. The holiday will be on Saturday 25 December in 2027. Samoa is a predominantly Christian nation and one of the few in the world that calls itself a Christian Nation in its own constitution. Unsurprisingly, then, Christmas Day is a major holiday in this South Pacific island country. Attending church on Christmas Day or Christmas Eve is traditional in Samoa. There are a wide range of denominations present, including Congregationalist, Roman Catholic, Methodist, Charismatic, and others. But all of them celebrate the birth of the Messiah, Jesus, who came into the world to save sinners. At church, at home, or on the street, you will likely be told to have a “fiafia” Christmas, the Samoan word for “merry”. You may see some people dancing for Christmas too. Traditional dances like the “siva” and “sasa” are a part of the “fa’asamoa”, meaning the Samoan way of life. Christmas is deemed the perfect time to combine Christianity with a Samoan traditional culture that is over 3,000 years old.

Easter Monday

Easter is regarded as the most important holy day by Christians, and in Réunion it is celebrated with a holiday on Easter Monday. The date of the holiday changes each year based on the centuries-old calculations that determine the Christian Ecclesiastical Calendar, such that the date of Easter Sunday can be anytime between 22 March and 25 April. Réunion, as an overseas department of France, celebrates mostly the same holidays as does mainland France, including Easter Monday. Also, the majority of the population is Christian and would want to observe Easter anyway. Réunion is a major destination for tourists, including during Easter Week, and the locals are quick to be festive this time of year too. Easter egg painting and egg hunts, midnight masses, large family feasts, and plenty of boisterous parties mark the season. Many take the opportunity around Eastertime to hike up to the rim of the island’s active volcano, Piton de la Fournaise. Others go mountain biking, visit the beach, go whale or dolphin watching, or see the abundant and diverse sea life at the Réunion Aquarium.

Easter Sunday

Easter is traditionally regarded as the most important of Christian holy days, and Easter in the Faroe Islands is celebrated with holidays on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. The date of Easter changes each year based on the centuries-old calculations that determine the Christian Ecclesiastical Calendar. This means that the date of Easter Sunday can be anytime between 22 March and 25 April. Faroe Islands, for the most part, shares its holiday calendar with Denmark, of which it is a part. Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday are all official public holidays, and people enjoy the four straight days off. But traditionally, Palm Sunday begins the celebrations for Holy Week, and some businesses may shut down from Thursday through Monday. Easter is intensely religious in Faroe Islands. People may even attend church on Easter Monday, which is an uncommon practice elsewhere in the world. Indeed, the Easter Week sees the faithful show up for almost a full week of services. The rest of the time is usually special time spent at home with family.
