— days to go

The Martyrdom of Imam, known as Shahadat-e Imam Ali, is a solemn Islamic observance commemorating the death of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, and the first Imam of Shia Islam. Imam Ali was assassinated on the 21st day of Ramadan in the Islamic calendar year 40 AH (approximately 661 CE), while praying at the Great Mosque of Kufa in present-day Iraq. He was struck by a poisoned sword wielded by Abd al-Rahman ibn Muljam, a Kharijite dissident, and died two days later. Imam Ali is revered across Islam for his profound wisdom, bravery, eloquence, and deep spirituality. His sermons and sayings, compiled in the book Nahj al-Balagha (The Peak of Eloquence), remain influential texts in Islamic philosophy and theology. The day is marked by mourning, reflection, and commemoration, particularly among Shia Muslims worldwide.

History

Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib was born inside the Kaaba in Mecca around 601 CE and was raised by the Prophet Muhammad after the death of his father. He was the first male to accept Islam and played a central role in early Islamic history as a military commander, advisor, and judge. Following the death of the Prophet Muhammad in 632 CE, disputes over succession led to the first major schism in Islam. Ali eventually became the fourth Caliph in 656 CE, but his caliphate was marked by internal conflicts including the Battle of the Camel and the Battle of Siffin. In 661 CE, while leading the dawn prayer at the Great Mosque of Kufa, he was attacked by Ibn Muljam, a Kharijite seeking revenge for the death of fellow Kharijites at the Battle of Nahrawan. Imam Ali died on the 21st of Ramadan at the age of approximately 60. His shrine in Najaf, Iraq, remains one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Islamic world.

How It's Celebrated

The Martyrdom of Imam Ali is observed as a day of profound mourning, particularly among Shia Muslims in Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan, India, and other countries with significant Shia populations. Believers gather in mosques and husayniyas for majalis (mourning assemblies) where scholars recount the life, virtues, and tragic death of Imam Ali. Elegies and marsiyas (lamentation poems) are recited, and participants often wear black clothing as a sign of mourning. The Quran is recited, and special prayers are offered. Large processions may take place in cities with significant Shia communities. The faithful also engage in charitable acts, feeding the poor, and attending lectures about Imam Ali's teachings on justice, spirituality, and governance. The city of Najaf, Iraq, hosting Imam Ali's shrine, attracts millions of pilgrims during this period.

Eid al-Adha Holiday

Eid al-Adha is the most important of all Islamic holidays on Bahrain’s national calendar. It occurs on the tenth day of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah on the Islamic calendar, while the date moves 11 days earlier each year on the Gregorian calendar. In 2026, Eid al-Adha falls on Wednesday 27 May. The holiday will be on Sunday 16 May in 2027. Eid al-Adha is a very holy day for Muslims, yet, in Bahrain, it has become a very exuberant festival day as well. There are many events for kids and adults alike all over the island, and there are many special luncheons at hotels and restaurants as well as fireworks shows. Most Muslims will go to mosque, sacrifice an animal for the feast if they can afford it, put on their best clothes, visit friends and relatives, and spend a lot of time with family at home.

Eid al-Fitr Holiday

Eid al-Fitr is celebrated in Syria with much religious fervour and general merriment. The national holiday comes on the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal, immediately following the holy month of Ramadan and month-long period of fasting, prayer and devotion. It is one of the most important of all Muslim commemorations. In Syria, the great majority of the population is Muslim and is very keen on observing Eid al-Fitr. This holiday has been celebrated for around 1,400 years by Muslims all over the world and is deeply ingrained into Islamic culture. Eid al-Fitr is called the Lesser Eid in deference to Eid Al-Adha, the Greater Eid, but being the second most important holiday on the Islamic Calendar is certainly not a small place. And the date of Eid al-Fitr, right after the fasting days of Ramadan, makes it especially memorable to participants. On Eid al-Fitr, many Syrians will attend public prayers, ask forgiveness and give forgiveness to others, give a gift of food or money to the poor, give small gifts to children, enjoy a festive meal at home, and spend the day off work with family. In Syria, men traditionally go door to door for Eid, wishing everyone a happy Eid and accepting coffee and traditional sweets like Mamoul cookies as they go!

National Day

National Day, formerly called “Swedish Flag Day”, is a patriotic holiday in Sweden that is celebrated annually on 6 June with a public holiday. In 2026, National Day falls on Saturday 6 June. The holiday will be on Sunday 6 June in 2027. One reason the date of 6 June was chosen because it is the day in 1523 when Sweden became independent of the Union of Kalmar, which had formerly united Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. It was a genuine new start for Sweden, and it was the occasion of their electing Gustav Vasa as their king and adopting their own flag. The second reason for choosing 6 June is that, in 1809, Sweden adopted a new constitution on that date. The tradition of celebrating 6 June as Flag Day began in the 1890s, when Artur Hazelius held such celebrations at his Stockholm-based open-air museum named “Skansen.” In 1916, the tradition gained yet more steam when it was honoured at the Stockholm Olympics. In 1983, the name was changed to “National Day” by the Swedish parliament, and in 2004, it was finally voted an official public holiday. The main celebration of National Day is still at Skansen. The king and queen arrive for the ceremonial raising of the Swedish flag, a yellow cross against a blue field, to the top of the flag pole. Kids dress up in traditional clothing then bring the king and queen bouquets of beautiful, Swedish flowers.
