Eid al-Adha

The largely Muslim land of Mauritania takes celebration of Eid al-Adha very seriously. A two-day public holiday is observed each year as part of the festivities. In 2026, Eid al-Adha falls on Wednesday 27 May. The holiday will be on Monday 17 May in 2027. A special government moon-sighting committee announces the first day of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah every year, which then sets the date for Eid al-Adha on the tenth day of that month. And the celebration continues for four days from the tenth to the fourteenth of Dhu al-Hijjah. The first order of business for Muslims on Eid al-Adha is to put on their best clothes and head to mosque in early morning. There they learn about Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail to Allah. Then they head home to slaughter an animal, share part of it with the poor, and then feast and celebrate all day with family and friends.

Eid al-Fitr

One of the most important holidays in Algeria and many other Islamic countries is Eid al-Fitr. Eid al-Fitr means “festivity of breaking of the fast”, and it comes at the end of the long fasting and prayer month of Ramadan on the first day of the month Shawwal. In 2027, Eid al-Fitr falls on Tuesday 9 March. The holiday will be on Saturday 26 February in 2028. During Eid, Algerians attend a local mosque for prayers and a sermon. They will also give an offering to charity, usually in the form of food, called the “zakat al-Fitr”. As in many other lands, Algerians buy and wear new clothing for Eid al-Fitr, and the wearing of traditional cultural clothing has become popular again in recent years. At home, people will indulge in large feasts, which are quite welcome after the long fast. chick peas couscous pasta, beef, sea food, vegetables, and fruits, are all consumed at family feasts. Many will also exchange gifts and cards and, of course, greet each other with “Happy Eid!” this time of year.

Eid al-Fitr Holiday

Eid al-Fitr is celebrated in Syria with much religious fervour and general merriment. The national holiday comes on the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal, immediately following the holy month of Ramadan and month-long period of fasting, prayer and devotion. It is one of the most important of all Muslim commemorations. In Syria, the great majority of the population is Muslim and is very keen on observing Eid al-Fitr. This holiday has been celebrated for around 1,400 years by Muslims all over the world and is deeply ingrained into Islamic culture. Eid al-Fitr is called the Lesser Eid in deference to Eid Al-Adha, the Greater Eid, but being the second most important holiday on the Islamic Calendar is certainly not a small place. And the date of Eid al-Fitr, right after the fasting days of Ramadan, makes it especially memorable to participants. On Eid al-Fitr, many Syrians will attend public prayers, ask forgiveness and give forgiveness to others, give a gift of food or money to the poor, give small gifts to children, enjoy a festive meal at home, and spend the day off work with family. In Syria, men traditionally go door to door for Eid, wishing everyone a happy Eid and accepting coffee and traditional sweets like Mamoul cookies as they go!

Novruz Holiday

Novruz is the Persian New Year celebration which is observed with a multi-day public holiday in Iran. Even though Novruz has its roots in Zoroastrianism, the religion of much of Persia before the arrival of Islam, Iran still uses the old Persian calendar officially and starts each year with Novruz. Novruz means “new day” and is traditionally celebrated at the Vernal Equinox that marks the beginning of spring. Novruz or an equivalent holiday is celebrated all over central Asia as well as in Iran, but each country and region celebrates it a bit differently. In Iran, families traditionally set a table with seven new year’s foods that all begin with the letter “sin”, which is essentially the equivalent of “s” in English. The spread includes items like sprouts, herbs, spices, and fried fruits. Also on Novruz, people may buy a seed and let it sprout over the next two weeks. On day 13, they throw it into water so it can potentially grow into a plant. It’s traditional to clean your house, exchange gifts, and visit relatives and friends during the two-week celebration that begins on Novruz.
