Peace Officers Memorial Day
Friday, May 15, 2026
Peace Officers Memorial Day honours law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty. Observed on 15 May, it is a memorial observance rather than a federal holiday, marked by candlelight vigils and by lowering flags to half-staff to remember fallen officers.
History
The observance grew out of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, which is held each year in mid-May and is sponsored by the Concerned Police Officers of America. Since 1984 the day has been observed by police departments across the United States, typically with a moment of silence and the reading of the names of officers killed in the line of duty. It falls shortly after National Police Week, which falls in early May.
How It's Celebrated
Police departments hold candlelight vigils, remembrance ceremonies and formal roll calls honouring officers lost in the previous year. Flags are lowered to half-staff, a moment of silence is observed at the start of each shift, and badges are placed at the foot of memorials as a sign of solidarity with the families of the fallen.
