Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Day
Tuesday, March 17, 2026
Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Day honours Ramon Magsaysay, the seventh President of the Philippines, who served from 1953 to 1957 and is remembered for his unassuming leadership and his efforts against poverty, illiteracy and corruption. Observed in late March, it commemorates his death on 17 March 1957.
History
Ramon Magsaysay was a former guerrilla commander during the Second World War who became the seventh President of the Philippines in 1953. He was noted for his austere personal style, for travelling without entourages, and for the Magsaysay Memorial Awards, which honoured outstanding community service in Asia. He died of leukemia on 17 March 1957 while in office. His death is commemorated at the Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Shrine in Manila, and his legacy underpins the Philippines' civic values of leadership, service and public service.
How It's Celebrated
The Philippine government and the Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Foundation hold commemorations at the memorial shrine in Manila, with wreath-laying and remembrances. Schools and civic groups use the day for citizenship and leadership programmes, and the Magsaysay Awards continue the tradition of recognising selfless service to the community.
