— days to go

Saint Gertrude of Nivelles Day, observed on March 17, honors the 7th-century Benedictine abbess who became one of the most beloved saints of the Low Countries. Born in 626 CE into a noble Frankish family in what is now Belgium, Gertrude was the daughter of Pepin of Landen, mayor of the palace of Austrasia. She refused an arranged marriage and devoted her life to religious service, becoming abbess of the double monastery of Nivelles at the age of 20. Saint Gertrude is venerated as the patron saint of cats, gardeners, travelers, and the recently deceased, and is invoked against fever, mental illness, and mouse and rat infestations. Her association with cats stems from the medieval belief that she could protect against rodents, leading to her depiction in art with a mouse or cat at her side. She is also considered the patron saint of hospitals and was known for her hospitality to pilgrims and her care for the poor. Saint Gertrude's Abbey in Nivelles became a major pilgrimage site in medieval Europe, and her feast day remains an important celebration in Belgium.

History

Gertrude was born in 626 in Landen, now part of Belgium, into the powerful Pippinid family. After her father's death when she was about 14, her mother, Itta, sought to arrange a politically advantageous marriage. Gertrude refused, declaring she would have no spouse but Christ. Together with her mother, she established a double monastery in Nivelles, where Gertrude became abbess at age 20. Under her leadership, Nivelles became an important center of learning and spirituality, attracting Irish missionary monks who brought manuscripts and learning. Gertrude was known for her rigorous asceticism, which eventually weakened her health. She resigned as abbess around 656 and spent her final years studying Scripture and preparing for death. She died on March 17, 659, at the age of 33. After her death, numerous miracles were reported at her tomb, and she was canonized by popular acclaim, a common practice at the time. Her cult spread widely throughout the Netherlands, Germany, France, and England during the Middle Ages. The town of Nivelles grew around her abbey, which was destroyed by bombing in 1940 but subsequently rebuilt.

How It's Celebrated

Saint Gertrude's Day is celebrated primarily in Belgium, particularly in the city of Nivelles, where special church services honor the city's patron saint. Traditional processions carry relics of the saint through the streets. Many cat owners give their pets special treats on this day in recognition of Saint Gertrude's role as patron of cats. In some parts of Belgium and the Netherlands, gardeners plant their first spring crops under her protection. Visitors to Nivelles tour the Collegiate Church of Saint Gertrude, a Romanesque church that houses her relics. The day also involves baking traditional spiced cookies and cakes. In rural areas, farmers invoke her blessing for protection against field pests.

Assumption Day

Assumption Day is also known as the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and is observed every 15 August in Lithuania. Assumption Day celebrates the day when, according to Catholic tradition and doctrine, the Virgin Mary was assumed bodily into Heaven. In 2026, Assumption Day falls on Saturday 15 August. The holiday will be on Sunday 15 August in 2027. The Assumption of Mary has been a church tradition since at least the 4th Century A.D., but it was not an officially recognised Catholic dogma until the 1950 declaration of Pope Pious XII. Over three-fourths of Lithuanians consider themselves Roman Catholic, so it’s no surprise that they have made Assumption of Mary a national holiday in their country. In Lithuania, however, ancient traditions are mixed in with Assumption Day teaching and practices. The day is called “Zoline” by many, a Lithuanian word meaning “Meadow Grass Day”. It became an official holiday only in 2000 but has been celebrated much longer. Flowers and wheatears are taken to churches on Zoline. It is a harvest tradition that has pagan roots but is now associated with Mary as the first of the Church, other than Jesus himself, to be given a glorified body. Thus, she is like the first of the new harvest in a spiritual comparison according to Roman Catholic teaching. There is a festival for Zoline in the town of Pivasiunai, which is the biggest such celebration in all Lithuania. It goes on for eight straight days. A painting of Mary with the baby Jesus is at the centre of the celebrations.

Christmas Day

Christmas in New Caledonia is celebrated with a public holiday every 25 December, as it is in a majority of countries around the world. This Christian festivity commemorates the birth of Jesus, and is part of a 22-28 day season in the Christian calendar known as Advent. In 2026, Christmas falls on Friday 25 December. The holiday will be on Saturday 25 December in 2027. Christmas Day and the Christmas season are a busy time of year in New Caledonia. This is one of the main tourist seasons on the island with many from Australia, New Zealand, and France coming here while the kids are out of school. About half in New Caledonia are Catholic and often go to mass all night on the day before Christmas. They seek to welcome Christmas morning while joyfully remembering the day that Christ was born. Many Protestants and Evangelicals in New Caledonia go to church on Christmas Day or the Sunday nearest to Christmas to celebrate the birth of the Saviour. The capital city of Noumea is lit up like a Christmas tree for the holidays each year. The city centre is the brightest spot, including Coconut Palm Square, the capital complex, and the Noumea Museum. Both palm trees and buildings are decked out with multi-coloured lights for the occasion.

Easter Monday

Easter is regarded as the most important holy day by Christians, and in Réunion it is celebrated with a holiday on Easter Monday. The date of the holiday changes each year based on the centuries-old calculations that determine the Christian Ecclesiastical Calendar, such that the date of Easter Sunday can be anytime between 22 March and 25 April. Réunion, as an overseas department of France, celebrates mostly the same holidays as does mainland France, including Easter Monday. Also, the majority of the population is Christian and would want to observe Easter anyway. Réunion is a major destination for tourists, including during Easter Week, and the locals are quick to be festive this time of year too. Easter egg painting and egg hunts, midnight masses, large family feasts, and plenty of boisterous parties mark the season. Many take the opportunity around Eastertime to hike up to the rim of the island’s active volcano, Piton de la Fournaise. Others go mountain biking, visit the beach, go whale or dolphin watching, or see the abundant and diverse sea life at the Réunion Aquarium.
