Tuesday, October 6, 2026
Turkmenistan Earthquake Memorial Day remembers the earthquake that devastated the country on 6 October 2000, killing tens of thousands of people and destroying the homes of hundreds of thousands more. Observed on 6 October, it is a day of mourning for the victims and of remembrance for the country's recovery.
History
The earthquake struck Ashgabat and the surrounding region in the early hours of 6 October 2000 with a magnitude of 7.0. Most buildings in the capital collapsed, and the death toll was estimated at around 45,000, with hundreds of thousands left homeless. The government declared three days of national mourning and the date was subsequently observed as a memorial day. The disaster prompted extensive international relief efforts and drove a long programme of rebuilding and stricter construction standards.
How It's Celebrated
Commemorations are held at memorial sites and cemeteries, with wreaths laid and moments of silence observed for the victims. Survivors and victims' families gather for remembrance ceremonies, and the day is also marked by educational programmes about the earthquake and the country's reconstruction.
