Labor Day

Labor Day in the Philippines is a public holiday every 1 May to celebrate the Filipino worker. It is a chance to remember hard-won workers’ rights. In 2027, Labor Day falls on Saturday 1 May. The holiday will be on Monday 1 May in 2028. Labor Day is also a day for unions to bring attention to current issues affecting workers. In 1886, unions in the United States were successful in demanding an eight-hour working day. In the Philippines, which was under United States colonial rule, workers organised a rally at the American Governor-General’s residence demanding fairer working conditions. This is officially recognised as the country’s first Labor Day. However, it wasn’t until after 1913 when eight-hour days, as well as other workers’ rights, were granted to the people. Labor Day in the Philippines also shares much of its ethos with other Labor Day celebrations around the world. Often many unions stage demonstrations at Malacañang (the former American-Governor’s residence, now Presidential palace) and big cities such as Manila, to bring attention to their grievances. Issues such as raising the minimum wage and inhumane working conditions continue to be brought before the government.

National Day

National Day, formerly called “Swedish Flag Day”, is a patriotic holiday in Sweden that is celebrated annually on 6 June with a public holiday. In 2026, National Day falls on Saturday 6 June. The holiday will be on Sunday 6 June in 2027. One reason the date of 6 June was chosen because it is the day in 1523 when Sweden became independent of the Union of Kalmar, which had formerly united Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. It was a genuine new start for Sweden, and it was the occasion of their electing Gustav Vasa as their king and adopting their own flag. The second reason for choosing 6 June is that, in 1809, Sweden adopted a new constitution on that date. The tradition of celebrating 6 June as Flag Day began in the 1890s, when Artur Hazelius held such celebrations at his Stockholm-based open-air museum named “Skansen.” In 1916, the tradition gained yet more steam when it was honoured at the Stockholm Olympics. In 1983, the name was changed to “National Day” by the Swedish parliament, and in 2004, it was finally voted an official public holiday. The main celebration of National Day is still at Skansen. The king and queen arrive for the ceremonial raising of the Swedish flag, a yellow cross against a blue field, to the top of the flag pole. Kids dress up in traditional clothing then bring the king and queen bouquets of beautiful, Swedish flowers.

National Day Holiday

National Day on 16 December is the celebration of Bahrain’s independence and of the accession to the throne of its first post-independence monarch in 1971. In 2026, National Day falls on Wednesday 16 December. The holiday will be on Thursday 16 December in 2027. The history of Bahrain prior to 1971 is long and complicated. It was first the site of the ancient Dilmun Civilisation. Then came the conversion to Islam and a period of Arab rule in the 600’s A.D. Next, in 1521, the Portuguese took control, followed by the Persians in 1602 and the Bani Utbah clan in 1783. During the 1800’s, the British gained influence that ultimately amounted to control. Even after the British left, however, a treaty of friendship was signed. National Day celebrations are very long and widespread in Bahrain, extending through the entire month of December and including a wide array of events in every part of the island. There are fireworks displays, impressive lights shows at night, colourful decoration of public monuments, flags set out all along the highways, folk dancing and singing, carnivals, “air parades,” heritage shows, and numerous speeches praising the accomplishments of of Bahrain and its citizens.

New Year Holiday

New Year’s Day is a holiday in Botswana as part of celebrations that start on New Year’s Eve and reach a high point with the turning of the clock from 11:59pm on 31 December to midnight on 1 January. In 2027, New Year's Day falls on Friday 1 January. The holiday will be on Saturday 1 January in 2028. New Year’s Day is a time of resolutions and starting fresh for some, while for others it is spent recovering from a big, late night spent with friends and family. In Botswana, New Year’s Day is a bigger holiday even than Christmas, and Botswana’s population is bustling with excitement as the new year approaches. It’s a day people look forward to practically for 364 days until it finally comes! As you walk down the streets on New Year’s Eve in cities and towns of Botswana, you’ll hear jubilant exclamations of “Happy!” with the final “y” stressed and stretched out long. Many people attend one or more parties for the New Year countdown, and many hold braais barbecues. When the clock finally strikes midnight, you’ll hear an explosion of drums. Some people and international tourists go to the town of Maun for a getaway in vacation lodges for the New Year season. Maun lies at the edge of the Okavango Delta and its swampy, wild terrain and wildlife.
