— days to go

Vincy Mas is the annual carnival celebration held in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, a Caribbean island nation in the Lesser Antilles. Typically taking place in late June and early July, Vincy Mas represents one of the Caribbean's most vibrant and culturally significant carnival celebrations, featuring a dynamic fusion of African, European, and indigenous Carib cultural traditions. The festival includes a packed calendar of events spanning several weeks, with highlights such as the crowning of the Carnival Queen, calypso and soca music competitions, steel pan performances, J'Ouvert morning celebrations, and the grand Mardi Gras-style parade of costumed bands known as pretty mas. Vincy Mas was officially launched in July 1977 as an initiative to boost summer tourism, but its roots draw on the long-standing traditions of Caribbean carnival culture, which itself traces back to the pre-Lenten celebrations brought by French colonizers and the subsequent cultural contributions of African-descended Vincentians. The festival is a major expression of Vincentian national identity and pride.

History

The history of Vincy Mas officially began in 1977 when the government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, led by then-Premier Milton Cato, decided to move the traditional carnival celebration from the pre-Lenten season to the summer months to capitalize on the tourist season. The first Vincy Mas was held from July 8 to July 17, 1977, and featured a Queen Show, calypso competition, and street parade. This decision followed a wider trend in the Eastern Caribbean, with Trinidad having the most influential carnival culture in the region. However, the roots of carnival in Saint Vincent stretch back to the 18th century when French settlers first brought the tradition to the islands. After the British took control, carnival traditions continued among the African-descended population, who infused the celebration with their own musical forms and cultural expressions. The steel pan, which is central to Vincy Mas, has been part of Vincentian culture since the 1940s. Over the decades, Vincy Mas has evolved to feature increasingly elaborate costumes, modern soca music, and an expanded schedule of events that now makes it the country's premier annual cultural festival.

How It's Celebrated

Vincy Mas celebrations begin weeks before the main parade with a series of events including calypso and soca monarch competitions, steel pan festivals, and the Carnival Queen pageant. J'Ouvert morning, a key tradition starting before dawn, sees revelers covered in paint, mud, or powder dancing through the streets to soca music played from massive sound systems. Mardi Gras or pretty mas day features the grand parade where costumed bands in elaborate, colorful costumes dance through the streets of Kingstown, the capital, competing for prizes. Street parties known as fêtes continue day and night, featuring local and regional soca and dancehall artists. Traditional Vincentian foods are enjoyed throughout the festival, including breadfruit, fried fish, callaloo, and roti. The festival concludes with the burning or burial of King Momo, marking the end of the carnival season and the return to normal life.

Eid al-Adha Holiday

Eid al-Adha is the most important of all Islamic holidays on Bahrain’s national calendar. It occurs on the tenth day of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah on the Islamic calendar, while the date moves 11 days earlier each year on the Gregorian calendar. In 2026, Eid al-Adha falls on Wednesday 27 May. The holiday will be on Sunday 16 May in 2027. Eid al-Adha is a very holy day for Muslims, yet, in Bahrain, it has become a very exuberant festival day as well. There are many events for kids and adults alike all over the island, and there are many special luncheons at hotels and restaurants as well as fireworks shows. Most Muslims will go to mosque, sacrifice an animal for the feast if they can afford it, put on their best clothes, visit friends and relatives, and spend a lot of time with family at home.

Eid al-Fitr Holiday

Eid al-Fitr is celebrated in Syria with much religious fervour and general merriment. The national holiday comes on the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal, immediately following the holy month of Ramadan and month-long period of fasting, prayer and devotion. It is one of the most important of all Muslim commemorations. In Syria, the great majority of the population is Muslim and is very keen on observing Eid al-Fitr. This holiday has been celebrated for around 1,400 years by Muslims all over the world and is deeply ingrained into Islamic culture. Eid al-Fitr is called the Lesser Eid in deference to Eid Al-Adha, the Greater Eid, but being the second most important holiday on the Islamic Calendar is certainly not a small place. And the date of Eid al-Fitr, right after the fasting days of Ramadan, makes it especially memorable to participants. On Eid al-Fitr, many Syrians will attend public prayers, ask forgiveness and give forgiveness to others, give a gift of food or money to the poor, give small gifts to children, enjoy a festive meal at home, and spend the day off work with family. In Syria, men traditionally go door to door for Eid, wishing everyone a happy Eid and accepting coffee and traditional sweets like Mamoul cookies as they go!

National Day

National Day, formerly called “Swedish Flag Day”, is a patriotic holiday in Sweden that is celebrated annually on 6 June with a public holiday. In 2026, National Day falls on Saturday 6 June. The holiday will be on Sunday 6 June in 2027. One reason the date of 6 June was chosen because it is the day in 1523 when Sweden became independent of the Union of Kalmar, which had formerly united Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. It was a genuine new start for Sweden, and it was the occasion of their electing Gustav Vasa as their king and adopting their own flag. The second reason for choosing 6 June is that, in 1809, Sweden adopted a new constitution on that date. The tradition of celebrating 6 June as Flag Day began in the 1890s, when Artur Hazelius held such celebrations at his Stockholm-based open-air museum named “Skansen.” In 1916, the tradition gained yet more steam when it was honoured at the Stockholm Olympics. In 1983, the name was changed to “National Day” by the Swedish parliament, and in 2004, it was finally voted an official public holiday. The main celebration of National Day is still at Skansen. The king and queen arrive for the ceremonial raising of the Swedish flag, a yellow cross against a blue field, to the top of the flag pole. Kids dress up in traditional clothing then bring the king and queen bouquets of beautiful, Swedish flowers.
