Lakshmi Puja

Lakshmi Puja is a Hindu festival that falls on the new moon day of the Hindu month of Ashwin. It is the main event of the larger Hindu festival of Deepavali. In 2026, Lakshmi Puja falls on Sunday 25 October. The holiday will be on Friday 29 October in 2027. During Lakshmi Puja, the goddess Lakshmi is thought to wander about at night. And to attract this “goddess of health and wealth” inside, diyas (small clay oil lamps) are lit and placed near windows and on balconies. Also, houses are cleaned during the day because Lakshmi is believed to love cleanliness so that she will visit the cleanest houses first. Sweets are also put out for Lakshmi, and people put on their finest (or even brand new) clothes. The very broom that is used to clean the house in preparation for Lakshmi’s visit is sometimes worshiped and given offerings. All of this is done because Lakshmi being pleased when she visits the house is thought to determine the health and prosperity of the family for the year to come. Lakshmi Puja is also a time for honouring mothers, who are thought to “partially embody” Lakshmi. Some people will put lit diya lamps on rivers and let them drift in the night. Others will go out and set off fireworks both for the display and to chase off evil spirits. And everyone takes part in the family feast near the end of the night.

Thanksgiving Day

The fact that Thanksgiving Day is a public holiday in Liberia certainly has American roots, but in Liberia, the holiday falls on the first rather than the final Thursday of November. In 2026, Thanksgiving Day falls on Thursday 5 November. The holiday will be on Thursday 4 November in 2027. The freed black slaves from the US who colonised Liberia began celebrating Thanksgiving in their new home as early as the 1880’s. In Liberia, Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate the harvest season as well as to attend special church services and give thanks to God for all of His abundant blessings on oneself, one’s family, and the whole nation. When Thanksgiving Day arrives, Liberians flock to churches and other places of worship. Farmers bring some of the fruit from their recent harvest to church and then hold a fresh produce auction at the end of the service. After church, there are family gatherings and celebrations in homes, though they are not as big as those typically held in the US. Thanksgiving in Liberia isn’t “Turkey Day” like in the US. It’s not primarily even “Family Day”. It’s a time to focus on thanking God for all His blessings, and especially for a free country to live in.

Thanksgiving Day Holiday

Thanksgiving Day comes on 25 October in Grenada to celebrate the liberation of the island from Cuban-backed Communist forces on 25 October 1983. The invasion by US forces restored democratic rule to Grenada and also ensured the protection of some US medical students living in Grenada at the time. The invasion carried the codename “Urgent Fury”. In 2026, Thanksgiving Day falls on Sunday 25 October. The holiday will be on Monday 25 October in 2027. The history of Grenada leading up to the invasion had been unstable. First of all, Grenada had become independent from Britain only nine years before, in 1974. Then, in 1979, a Communist coup took over the country. But in 1983, a revolt overthrew that regime. It was at that point that a greater conflict between Cuba and the US played out in the battle over Grenada. It was a moment when “the Cold War turned hot”. On Thanksgiving Day, schools, government offices, and most businesses close. There are special ceremonies to honour those who fought and died for their country in the conflict of 1983. And there are also special church services that people attend to express their thankfulness to God for a free, prosperous country.

Angam Day

Angam Day is a public holiday celebrated every 26 October on the Pacific island state of Nauru. In 2026, Angam Day falls on Monday 26 October. The holiday will be on Tuesday 26 October in 2027. Angam can be translated as “jubilation”. And the holiday arose due to the jubilation over the population of Nauru recovering twice after periods of decline. After World War I, the Australian administrator of Nauru stated that the population of the island was too low and would need to reach at least 1,500 if the Nauruan race was to ultimately survive. The population of Nauru reached 1,500 on 26 October, 1932, with the birth of “the Angam Baby” and a national holiday called “Angam Day” was declared. However, during World War II, the population of Nauru again ebbed low, to a little over 1,100 right after the war. Once 1,500 had again been reached, on 31 March, 1949, Angam Day again began to be celebrated. But the date of the holiday is still based on the first time the population reached 1,500 in 1932 instead of the second time in 1949. Today, Angam Day is a time to celebrate the history and culture of Nauru. It’s a time when the perseverance of Nauru’s people through times of difficulty is highlighted and when the many achievements of the nation are put in the spotlight.

Labour Day

Labour Day is a major public holiday in Macau, as well as mainland China. The holiday is also called May Day or Workers Day. In 2027, Labour Day falls on Saturday 1 May. The holiday will be on Monday 1 May in 2028. Labour Day on 1 May is an off-work day for those in Macau and mainland China, and it’s a huge tourist day in Macau. As many as 500,000 or more visitors flood into Macau every Labour Day, especially for the years when the holiday creates a long weekend. The gambling industry is the main cause of the tourist surge, as Macau is a gaming centre in the region. The casinos are packed, hotels are sold out, and the streets are crowded with tourists. In addition to being a day of recreation, Labour Day traditionally seeks to draw attention to the contributions and rights of workers to the economy.

Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti

Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti is a Hindu holiday much celebrated throughout India. It follows the Hindu traditional calendar, but falls sometime during September or October on the Gregorian Calendar. In 2026, Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti falls on Monday 26 October. The holiday will be on Friday 15 October in 2027. The “jayanti,” or birth anniversary, of Maharishi Valmiki, a famed Hindu poet, is the cause for the occasion. Valmiki wrote the Ramayana, an extremely lengthy portion of the Hindu scriptures that is put in the style of epic poetry. It was originally written in Sanskrit and contains an astounding 24,000 verses. Indians celebrate the memory of Maharishi Valmiki and of the literature he created in a number of different ways. Some carry his picture through city streets during colourful religious processions, even worshiping him and praying to his portrait. Others recite portions of his epic poetry in Hindu temples, especially at those temples that are specifically dedicated to him. Food is also given out to the poor at this time of year. Many tourists attend the parades and view the heavily decorated temples during Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti, besides visiting historical locations related to his life and influence.

National Day

National Day, formerly called “Swedish Flag Day”, is a patriotic holiday in Sweden that is celebrated annually on 6 June with a public holiday. In 2026, National Day falls on Saturday 6 June. The holiday will be on Sunday 6 June in 2027. One reason the date of 6 June was chosen because it is the day in 1523 when Sweden became independent of the Union of Kalmar, which had formerly united Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. It was a genuine new start for Sweden, and it was the occasion of their electing Gustav Vasa as their king and adopting their own flag. The second reason for choosing 6 June is that, in 1809, Sweden adopted a new constitution on that date. The tradition of celebrating 6 June as Flag Day began in the 1890s, when Artur Hazelius held such celebrations at his Stockholm-based open-air museum named “Skansen.” In 1916, the tradition gained yet more steam when it was honoured at the Stockholm Olympics. In 1983, the name was changed to “National Day” by the Swedish parliament, and in 2004, it was finally voted an official public holiday. The main celebration of National Day is still at Skansen. The king and queen arrive for the ceremonial raising of the Swedish flag, a yellow cross against a blue field, to the top of the flag pole. Kids dress up in traditional clothing then bring the king and queen bouquets of beautiful, Swedish flowers.

National Gospel Day

Cook Islands celebrates National Gospel Day on 26 October to commemorate the day in 1821 when the first Christian missionary brought the Gospel to the islanders. His name was John Williams, and he was sent by the London Missionary Society. He and his wife began their ministry in Tahiti but eventually made their way to the Cook Islands along with some Tahitian evangelists. In 2026, National Gospel Day falls on Monday 26 October. The holiday will be on Tuesday 26 October in 2027. Arriving on Aitutaki in 1821, Mr. Williams soon had some converts, and the Gospel began to spread from there to other islands in the Cook Islands chain. As the islanders were very receptive, Christianity spread quickly in the Cook Islands and most living there today are still Christians. The old idols were destroyed, churches built, and the culture deeply affected by the Gospel message. Quite naturally, the celebration of Gospel Day is focused at the local churches. But it also extends beyond them. There are special church services, Gospel Day pageant competitions, re-enactments and plays about the coming of the Gospel to the Cook Islands, fireworks displays, and much more. Families may also gather to read Bible verses that present the Gospel, to spend time together, and to feast and have fun.

October Bank Holiday

The October bank holiday is Ireland’s only Autumn holiday and falls on the last Monday of the month. It is also unofficially referred to as the halloween or Samhain bank holiday since the long weekend regularly falls on or adjacent to these festivals. In 2026, October Bank Holiday falls on Monday 26 October. The holiday will be on Monday 25 October in 2027. The October bank holiday was first marked in 1977 after the Irish government determined that the holiday would be welcomed to break up the long stretch of time between Summer and Christmas. The Minister of Labour of the time, Mr Michael O’Leary, was also responding to the need to bring Ireland more into line with the number of annual public holidays provided to workers in the European Economic Community (EEC, later to become the EU), which Ireland joined in 1973. According to a newspaper report at the time, “The Minister feels that there ought to be a public holiday between August and Christmas giving a long weekend. He also recognises the desirability of working people in Ireland being brought nearer the EEC norm as regards public holidays entitlements.” – Mayo News, 9 July 1977 The October bank holiday falls on or very near the Celtic festival of Samhain (31 October – 1 November) as well as the traditional Christian feasts of All Saints Day and All Souls Day (1-2 November) each year. In fact, the last Monday in October falls exactly on the 31st day of the month every five, six or 10 years. The October long weekend has been unofficially connected to the themes of these festivals since its inception in 1977. Additionally, the secular holiday of Halloween falls every 31 October and also borrows themes from Samhain, All Saints Day and All Souls Day. A journalist for the Irish Examiner wrote: “Halloween with the introduction of a new bank holiday on Monday next has become a special time not only for youngsters but also for adults. In fact with the extra day, it enables families to get together and to enjoy themselves.” – Irish Examiner, 28 October 1977. The October bank holiday was not welcomed by all, with some segments of society questioning the wisdom of reducing Irelands economic output by a full day per year as the country struggled through recession and inflation. An editorial in the Cord Examiner opined, “It is not at all in the sense of being niggardly that we suggest that the latest public holiday granted by the Ministry of Labour, that on the Hallowe’en weekend, is ill advised […] Everybody rightly welcomes a little respite from the daily grind, but thinking people will realise what such a luxury is likely to cost, especially at the time of economic stringency, when efforts are being made to boost rather than curtail production.” – The Cork Examiner, 28 June 1977 The October bank holiday is the second most recent holiday to be created in Ireland, the most recent being May Day, which was first officially marked in 1994.

Peniamina Gospel Day

In Niue, the adoption of Christianity by the nation as a whole is celebrated during the public holiday called Peniamina Gospel Day. In 2026, Peniamina Gospel Day falls on Monday 26 October. The holiday will be on Monday 25 October in 2027. The first Christian missionary to visit and work in Niue was John Williams. Williams was sent out by the London Missionary Society, arrived in Niue in 1830, and amazingly kidnapped two native children that he might teach them and convert them. These two were rejected by the islanders, however, when they tried to return to their former life and convert others. One of the two children, Niumaga, fled to Samoa. His friend Peniamina tagged along. In Samoa, Peniamina converted to Christianity under the ministry of George Turner. He also learned reading and writing skills. Finally, Peniamina came back home to Niue on 26 October, 1846 and started preaching to the people. Many people converted, and today, Niue is overwhelmingly Christian. Although the date of Peniamina’s return was 26 October, the holiday is celebrated on the fourth Monday of October to approximate the historical date while also creating a three-day weekend. Many churches will hold special services and events to remember Peniamina Gospel Day.

Independence Day

Mauritania became an independent nation by on 28 November 1960 by declaration of its “Constituent Assembly”. Independence Day is celebrated on this date each year to remember this important historic event. In 2026, Independence Day falls on Saturday 28 November. The holiday will be on Sunday 28 November in 2027. Although Berbers and other tribes had lived in the region for as long as anyone can remember, there was no “Mauritania” as such before the arrival of the French colonialists. They essentially created a new colony that incorporated the lands of numerous local tribes in the region into one “new country”. France colonised what is now Mauritania to block the expansion of Spanish Morocco and to create a “land bridge” between French Algeria and French West Africa. Their conquest of the area began at Adar and moved inland. After the French established a new constitution in 1958, they had hoped that Mauritania might remain within the “French Community” even if they opted for independence. But instead, the country fully left being under French influence by 1960. After independence, Morocco tried to oppose them or dominate them, but Mauritania successfully resisted.

Ochi Day

Ochi Day is a public holiday in Greece and Greek Cyprus that commemorates the resistance to the Axis powers during World War II. Ochi Day falls on every 28 October, the day in 1940 when Greek’s leader refused to surrender without a fight and, thus, brought Greece into World War II on the side of the Allies. In 2026, Ochi Day falls on Wednesday 28 October. The holiday will be on Thursday 28 October in 2027. After a long, bitter struggle to free themselves from Turkish domination in the 1800’s, Greece had finally become an independent nation again, but the 20th Century brought new challenges to their national existence. A dictator named Ioannis (John) Metaxas had ruled Greece since 1936, but he refused to align Greece with the Axis Powers. On 28 October 1940, Italian dictator Mussolini demanded Metaxas allow Axis forces to occupy Greece or face war. Metaxas’ reply was “Then it is war!” In legend, this has been summarised to “Ochi!” (no! in English). Italy’s army in neighbouring Albania immediately marched on Greece’s western border, but the Greeks counterattacked and drove them back through the Pindus Mountains and deep into Albania. Later, German forces joined in the fray, attacking from the eastern border. For four long days, the Greeks held off the Germans and forced them to bring in reinforcements, diverting German resources and costing them precious time. In this “Battle of Metaxas Line,” the fierceness of Greek resistance won them the praise of Allied leaders. Winston Churchill remarked that no longer would it be said of Greeks that they fight like heroes but of heroes that they “fight like Greeks”. For a time, Greece was the only nation allied with Britain against the Axis Powers, and many speculate that World War II could have lasted longer or could even have been lost were it not for the Greeks. The reason is because their resistance slowed Hitler down in his conquest of the Balkans, which then led to his invading Russia during the winter instead of spring.

The holiday will be on Friday 29 October in 2027. Norodom Sihamoni was born into the royal family of Cambodia in 1953, to the reigning king and queen. He ended up studying and living abroad for the greater part of his life, but he was in Cambodia when the dreaded Khmer Rouge took power. He was then put under arrest for two years, before being released. At that point he moved to France. In 2004 his father King Norodom Sihanouk suddenly abdicated due to falling into poor health. At that point, his son returned home to Cambodia. A council chose Sihamoni as the heir to the throne, and he was coronated in a highly formal ceremony on 29 October that year. Every year, Cambodians come out to celebrate the anniversary of King Norodom Sihamoni’s Coronation with great fanfare. There are parades, fireworks, entertainment events, and cultural displays. Republic Day

November 28 is Republic Day in Chad to celebrate the time in 1958 when Chad gained “autonomous” status “within the French Community”. In 2026, Republic Day falls on Saturday 28 November. The holiday will be on Sunday 28 November in 2027. This holiday is important in that it commemorates the establishment of a republican form of government and of limited autonomy for Chad. But full independence did not come until 11 August, 1960. Chad moved gradually toward independence from France, in several stages. The real beginnings of the independence movement was during World War II, when political parties began to emerge in Chad. But nonetheless, Chad remained loyal to Free France rather than taking France’s defeat by Nazi Germany as an opportunity to rebel. The move to partial autonomy in 1958 came on the heels of a referendum held to that effect. And all of French Equatorial Africa gained this status based on the referendum, not just Chad.

Philippines National Indigenous People's Thanksgiving Day

The Philippines National Indigenous People's Thanksgiving Day is observed annually on October 29 as part of the National Indigenous Peoples Month celebration. Established through Proclamation No. 1906 in 2009 by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the day honors the cultural heritage, traditions, and contributions of the indigenous peoples (IPs) of the Philippines, who number approximately 14 to 17 million across more than 110 ethnolinguistic groups. These groups include the Igorot of the Cordillera region, the Lumad of Mindanao, the Mangyan of Mindoro, and many others. The Thanksgiving Day promotes awareness of indigenous rights, particularly those enshrined in the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA) of 1997, also known as Republic Act 8371. This landmark legislation recognizes the rights of indigenous cultural communities to their ancestral domains, self-governance, cultural integrity, and free and prior informed consent over development projects affecting their lands. The celebration emphasizes gratitude for the bountiful harvest and the preservation of indigenous knowledge systems and practices.

Nevada Day

Nevada Day is  held on the final Friday of October and celebrates the admission of Nevada into the Union on 31 October 1864. Nevada Day has been celebrated in Nevada since the 1870’s, but it only became a state holiday in 1933. In 2026, Nevada Day falls on Friday 30 October. The holiday will be on Friday 29 October in 2027. Nevada Day was originally called “Admission Day” and was celebrated by the Pacific Coast Pioneer Society back in the 1870s. 31 October became a state-recognized holiday in 1933. However, the date was tweaked in 2000 to the final Friday of October to create a three-day weekend. It also avoids the coinciding of the holiday with Halloween, though occasionally it still does fall on 31 October. The roots of Nevada Day go back to the discovery of the Comstock Lode of silver and gold in 1859, which sparked a huge migration to what became Nevada Territory in 1861. By 1864, the territory was already populous enough to be admitted as a state. The biggest celebration of Nevada Day is held in the state capital of Carson City. There is a big parade, fun activities like beard contests and rock-drilling competitions, an Indian-style pow wow, concerts, balls, sports matches, and more. Other cities also have special events, but none can compare to Carson City’s.

Reformation Day

In 2008, Chile declared Reformation Day to be a new annual public holiday in honour of the evangelical and Protestant churches. In 2026, Reformation Day falls on Saturday 31 October. The holiday will be on Sunday 31 October in 2027. The date of Reformation Day – the Friday closest to 31 October – coincides with the day in 1517 when Martin Luther started the Protestant Reformation by pinning his “Disputation of Martin Luther on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences,” which came to be known as “The 95 Theses,” on the door of a German church. Only Slovenia and some German states also recognise the day as a public holiday. In 1517, Martin Luther wrote to the Archbishop of Mainz and Madeburg, protesting sale of “indulgences.” In the Catholic Church, indulgences were ways to reduce punishment one must undergo after sinning. In 1517, Johann Tetzel, who was the papal commissioner for indulgences, came to Germany in order to sell indulgences as a way to raise money to rebuild St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Luther condemned the sale of indulgences, claiming that someone who sinned could not buy salvation in the form of an indulgence. On October 31, 1517, Luther posted the letters on All Saints Church, an event that has been credited with starting the Protestant Reformation as the letters were quickly translated and distributed throughout Germany and eventually Europe. Although more than 70 percent of the population of Chile is roman Catholic, over the past few decades Evangelical and Protestant faiths have grown with more than 15 percent of the population claiming one of these religions. In an effort to recognise this growing trend, the government declared the new Reformation Day public holiday.
